Dumfries & Galloway Youth Advisory Forum discuss proposed National Park

On Wednesday 20 November our Dumfries & Galloway Youth Advisory Forum members Michael, Jake, Hannah, Lewis and Darrie welcomed Jameson, one of our new recruits in Dumfries and Galloway, to his first consultation meeting.

The group were asked to consider the topic of the proposed Galloway National Park in a session that was led by members of the consultations team at NatureScot, alongside:

  • Melissa Gunn, Youth and Employability Manager
  • Jayne Murdoch, Natural Capital Engagement Manager

NatureScot is proactively reaching out to consult with all age groups to discuss the Galloway National Park proposal, with a consultation currently taking place.

Discussion and feedback

Our YAF members learned about what a National Park is and discussed the factors that would need to be considered if the National Park status was to be granted in the region.

Our YAF members provided feedback to NatureScot on how the youth voice could be considered in decision-making relating to a National Park, if it is approved.

This session was a real insight on the views from our YAF members and will be fed back at the next SOSE Board meeting in December 2024.

The SOSE Board is really keen to hear the views of the young people in the Forum on this issue and it is great that Jake will also attend this session with the Board to provide further feedback and details.

Another very proactive meeting – look out for more updates on what our YAF members are up to!
