South businesses encouraged to join SOSE and become Carbon Literate Organisation

South of Scotland businesses, social enterprises and community groups are being encouraged to become a Carbon Literate Organisation.

It follows South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE) receiving its silver award from The Carbon Literacy Project, in recognition of its continued work to promote the benefits of a Just Transition to Net Zero for the region’s businesses, social enterprises and communities.

What is a Carbon Literacy Award?

The Carbon Literacy Project’s silver award is currently held by around 30 organisations across the UK and acknowledges a series of simple but significant actions undertaken by SOSE.

These include:

  • A substantial number of staff completing carbon literacy training
  • Integrating carbon literacy into performance management systems
  • Making a visible commitment to being the Carbon Literate Organisation.

SOSE’s efforts have included over three-quarters of staff and Board members having undertaken the carbon literacy training, making them more aware of climate change and recognising the steps that they can take to reduce their carbon footprint at home and at work.

SOSE's Net Zero commitment

The silver award accreditation is the latest action by SOSE to help lead the South of Scotland to a Just Transition to Net Zero – which means that as we reduce our emissions and respond to a changing climate, the journey is fair and creates a better future for everyone.

This has included work getting underway to create the first South of Scotland Net Zero Routemap, which will highlight what the South needs to do to adapt to changes in our regional climate.

Jane Morrison-Ross, Chief Executive of SOSE, said:

“SOSE is committed to helping lead a Just Transition to Net Zero in the South of Scotland and supporting as many local businesses, social enterprises, communities and individuals to join us on the journey.

“We know how challenging times are for businesses, social enterprises and community groups at the moment and some may not see Net Zero as a priority at this time.

“However, a just transition offers significant economic, social and climate opportunities for us all.

“One step businesses, social enterprises and community groups can make is by becoming a Carbon Literate Organisation which we would support and encourage them to do.”
