Published: 30 May 2022
We have welcomed the arrival of the world’s best mountain bike riders at Glentress Forest for the 2023 UCI World Championships.
The Tweed Valley venue will host the Mountain Bike Cross-country and Mountain Bike Marathon as part of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships which is being held in Glasgow and across Scotland in August 2023.
What is the UCI World Championships?
The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships will see 13 existing UCI World Championships combined for the first time to create one mega event.
Who is supporting Glentress event?
We are providing support to the Glentress Forest event, which is the ninth location across Scotland to be confirmed.
The Glentress event is also being supported locally by Forestry Land Scotland and Scottish Borders Council.
This latest announcement follows news last year that Dumfries and Galloway will host the para-cycling road event at the 2023 UCI World Championships, which SOSE is also supporting with Dumfries and Galloway Council.
Jane Morrison-Ross, Chief Executive of SOSE
“This announcement is momentous for the South of Scotland.
“The UCI World Championships is expecting to attract one million spectators and more than one billion viewers worldwide, making it one of the top 10 global sporting events.
“For the South to have a share of this audience by hosting three of the 13 events making up the Championships is going to provide a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase to the world what we have to offer.
“The South already has a wonderful reputation as a cycling destination, with a hugely exciting range of events being hosted in the coming months, such as Enduro World Series, British National Road Championships, Tour of Britain, Tweed Love and the new Raiders Gravel ride.
“In addition, SOSE is leading the new Mountain Bike Innovation Centre project, which is to be funded by Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, and will be a world-leading facility for the mountain biking and cycling sector.
“Working with our partners, we are pulling together a plan of action to ensure the South of Scotland capitalises on the legacy of cycling events such as the UCI World Championships, and help unlock the potential of our region.”
