Innovation Week: Countdown to success - new Satellite Data Challenge fund launched to explore natural capital innovation in South

A new £100,000 challenge fund has been launched to support space technology businesses in Scotland to develop innovative solutions that enhance natural capital in the South.

The Satellite Data Challenge for Natural Capital Enhancement aims to foster collaboration between space tech enterprises and partners in the South, and unlock economic business opportunities.

It aims to encourage the use of earth observation data to unlock new market opportunities, drive socio-economic growth, and support long-term sustainability.

Building on the South of Scotland’s designation as Scotland’s Natural Capital Innovation Zone, the fund will provide grants of up to £30,000 to eligible projects.

These grants can be used to cover staffing costs and equipment, with no match funding required.

Deadline for expressions of interest is 12noon on Friday 24 October, with a webinar to provide more information and answer any questions on the fund to be held in coming weeks.

The fund has been launched during Scotland’s first National Innovation Week, which we are using to highlight the work going on in the region to promote innovation.

Activities include Artificial Intelligence (AI) sessions, specialist scale-up coaching and the new Borderlands Deep Tech Accelerator Hub which will harness the potential of robotics, AI and deep tech.

Jane Morrison-Ross, Chief Executive of South of Scotland Enterprise, added:

“The new Satellite Data Challenge fund builds on the South of Scotland Space Strategy, which aims to awaken entrepreneurial opportunities, inspire new thinking, and create space jobs in the region.

“SOSE wants to support start-ups, scale-ups and businesses that see opportunities to develop new products in the space supply chain.”
